Welcome back to wednesday mixing trick, I received some DMs with interesting requests, someone of you asked me how to set-up the correct amount of reverb on vocals to avoid the infamous washy & lushy effect. Well, I usually use sidechain for vocals reverb. Yes you read right, sidechain!
In my opinion it's the best trick to calibrate the perfect amount of reverb on standard vocals and avoid the overuse of that effect, that is great to obtain "that pro sound", but if it's too much can easly destroy the impact of your vocal tracks.
Create a FX track, slap on it your favourite reverb (my choice is Valhalla Plate see pic for parameters) then a compressor (no fancy stuff just your DAW stock one) and setup your vocal track in the side chain of the compressor. Tweak compressor parameter (of course can't give you parameters, it strongly depends from your vocal track and from the amount of reverb you need to add) , when the singer is singing the compressor will turn the reverb down, when the vocalist stops, the compressor will let the reverb come up slowly. Adjusting the release time will determine how quickly the reverb swells in after the vocalist finishes a line.
That's it, let me know your comments or suggestions, or simply ask me for the next trick, cheers!
