I was initially afraid to publicly share that I was one of the SHIFT 17 that had thoughts of self-harm. I was afraid because of the stark reality of sanism: “discrimination and oppression against a mental trait or condition a person has, or is judged to have”. As a suicide survivor, I now know that suicide is an epidemic of a community unhealth rather than an individual’s fault. It points to the failure of communal/societal support for their community members. The narrative that it is an individual’s fault/pathology is a violent narrative of sanism within the context of white supremacy. . As I look at the healed over scars on my wrist from my early teens, I see the wisdom I had to be aware that something wasn’t working. Suicide is a political act—a protest or a drastic vote to the dominant culture that is no longer working. I don’t condone suicide, I am here to say I see the wisdom of the highly-sensitive ones who we drastically need in this world. . When I was bedridden and debilitated by mental unhealth and thoughts of self-harm at @shift_jh Emerging Leaders Program, I knew this was my body’s warning system that something dreadfully toxic and harmful was at play. It wasn’t about me wanting to harm myself, but it was about a system that was invisibilizing and harming me. My comrades of SHIFT 17 were lovingly in solidarity with me—they saw my strength while being bedridden. These folx had my back when I was one of the participants having panic attacks and was having thoughts of self-harm in this hostile environment under Christian Beckwith’s leadership. . Imagine if we held harmful people in power within a violent system accountable. Does maintaining a harmful man in power (yes, with all his social capital and networks to wealth) outweigh our BIWOC/QTPOC lives? How do we listen to the community warning signals of those most systemically impacted? . By posting this I am risking my professional “credibility” in the context of sanism/mentalism. Remember we need to center and co-empower neurodivergent + disabled voices in JEDI and co-liberation. Hold off pathologizing me and listen to the thread of sovereignty that is bound to yours. . #WontTakeSHIFTanymore

I’ve been posting all these amazing experiences the last 6 months from traveling the world and now recently reconnecting with my community. It’s been a gift. But there’s much more to the story. . . While I celebrate that I am happier than I have ever been and connected to myself in ways I had only dreamed of, my connection to this peace came from pain. . . I think life will serve us up chapter after chapter of invitations to address our pain, and move toward a life of living out our authentic self. In order to accept the invitation, we have to leave the life we have built (security and comfort included) behind... Or, at a minimum, not grip its comforts so tight. . . My challenge for you today: If you are hurting.... Can you sit in that hurt for a moment and be curious about what it represents? Can you daydream about the strength that will come from addressing this? . . If you are doubtful: Can you sit for a moment and think of the other times you were doubtful, and how that chapter evolved in great ways? How when that issue was over, you found more growth and hope? . . If you are entering into a new chapter and afraid: Can you share your story with the person closest to you and hear their echo of how they see you? Can you be incredibly kind to your fear and begin to work with it to turn it into confidence? . . If you’ve walked the darkness and celebrate being on the other side: Can you be aware today, that someone near you is hurting, and the simplest smile or hello can help them, the ways it’s helped you. . . If this touches you, then it was meant especially FOR YOU.... As always, KNOW.... You are NOT alone... . . Today I got my first tattoo, in honor of Gino, my horse who passed away April 17th 2015. Gino has always been there for me, no matter how f*king aweful my day was, how tired I was or no matter what mood I was in. He was my best friend, my child, my brother but most of all my pride. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He was by my side when my eating disorder started. Even though I was very sick, we reached a high level in dressage. If only I could have seen it back then, not being blindfolded by perfectionism. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He was by my side when my body gave up on me. He would walk up to a wall when he felt I was going to faint, and he wouldn't be naughty anymore. Just because he was afraid he was going to kill me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In July 2014 I started recovery for my eating disorder. Anorexia almost had the best of me. Almost. I knew I couldn't die because my horse would be sold to someone who wouldn't give him as much attention as I did. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ My body started to heal and we enjoyed our rides again, despite me weighting more than twice as much as I did a few months ago. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And then we received the call. He didn't eat it breakfast. The stable owners called the vet for us and after some checkups we we're told to go to the horse hospital at the other side of the country. He got all tubed in, tapped blood and he was ready to spend the night there. I visited him every day. 70 km from my home. Two days later, we were almost leaving the highway, we got a call. Gas in his bowels. If they were allowed to perform surgury? Of course, no matter the cost. Then, we received the call. He died peacefully at 11:14 am. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ His body was cremated and I always carry a small part of his ashes with me in a beautiful necklace, next to the holy Mother Mary my grandmother got me from Lourdes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Gino saved my life. He was with me during my anorexia and during my recovery. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I designed the tattoo myself. A combination of the Neda symbol and a horse. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Loved ones don't pass away fully until they are fully forgotten. They live on in our memories and in our hearts. I love you Gino ❤️
