It was great to share some perspectives on the “Palm Oil Free: Facts, Fiction, and Misleading Claims” event at the European Parliament today.
Some points I raised:
1. Palm oil continues to be a huge target for negative campaigns and false/unfounded claims here in the EU. These “sweeping”claims tend to prejudge that all palm oil is bad while neglecting and outweighing serious efforts to promote sustainable palm oil by Indonesia – not just by the Government, but also by the civil society.
2.Underlined that, no matter what, Indonesia continues to enhance its commitment on sustainable palm oil through ensuring a robust certification system, empowering smallholder farmers, in line with the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) -- holistic approach.
3. As equal partners, the European Union and Indonesia have the same aspirations and goals to fight against climate change and deforestation. Thus, what becomes important now is “how can we reconcile our (Indonesia – EU) differences and close the information gap on these misleading claims?”. A forward-looking approach and constructive partnership are needed going forward.
