Today I want to share with you a short overview over some christening traditions in Sweden. If you like it I could give you some more information next Saturday.

In Sweden royal christening are considered as a state ceremony nit like in other monarchies where christening are private ceremony.
The magnificent silver fountain shows this. It was designed at the end of the 17th century by the castle architect Nicodemus Tessin d.y. and was performed in Stockholm by the French silver smith J. F. Cousinet between 1696 and 1707.
The tradition of sponsors is also very old. At the Duke of Småland's christening in 1782, gilded chairs were placed in the choir for the various godparents. Sponsors like the kings of Prussia and Denmark were not personally present at the christening ceremony , but their chairs stood there and in these chairs portraits of these godparents were placed.
The ceremony is traditionally held by the archbishop.
