This was a measure to save money, for the sovereign paid for every Grand Duke about 800 thousand rubles of gold per year and for each Grand Duchess a dowry of about 3 million rubles of gold. Thus, these members were distinguished from the other princes of the Russian nobility with the title of "princes of imperial blood." Some examples within the imperial family are used to clarify this question. The daughter of Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna, the princess Irina Alexandrovna, even as niece of Tsar Nicholas II and granddaughter of Tsar Alexander III, was a princess, because she was granddaughter of a Tsar by feminine line and the grand-ducal title only extended by male line. Another example was the Princess Tatiana Konstantinovna who had only the title of princess because she was the great-granddaughter of a Tsar (Tsar Nicholas I) and the title only extended to grandchildren (men and women) by male line. The princes and princesses of imperial blood, from 1911 onwards, could marry "unqualified people", that is, they could marry members of the Russian nobility or even plebeians, but provided with the approval of the Tsar.
