Have you read this book? It’s a super fun one for back to school! It’s written like a ‘how-to’ book with different things kids can do or “teach” the teacher to get ready when school starts!⁠ *⁠ I suggest using it as a mentor text to teaching ‘how-to’ writing. Kids could come up with an idea of something they are good at and want their teacher to learn or something they want to help them with. Then they could write it in 4 simple steps (first, then, next, finally). Day 21: recommendation. . . . . I can’t stress this enough! I was that first year teacher that wanted my classroom to look like those I saw on Instagram with color, flexible seating, books, and countless other things. I spent so much money trying to get my FIRST classroom to look “pretty”! Guess what? As the school year went on I came to realize the kids don’t care about how pretty and decorated the classroom is or how bare and plain the walls are; they care about the teacher that is standing in front of them. The students cared more about me than any of the cool things I had in my classroom. So if you’re a first year teacher or a veteran teacher that is feeling left behind because of what people put up on social media, DONT! Keep teaching, caring, and loving those amazing little angels and don’t worry about the rest; at the end of the day they determine how good of a teacher you are not by your decorating skills or ability to spend money.

How do I get my students to reach for the stars? I believe that they can, so they do. ⠀ ⠀ It’s more than just “positive vibes”- it’s ignoring stereotypes. Overlooking biases. Tossing out negative comments heard in the hallway or lounge. ⠀ ⠀ It’s giving every child in your class a fresh start and opportunity to shine.
