Some months, the miles have better stories behind them than others. . July started with an amazing family trip to Washington DC and Virginia. The miles yielded views of and visits to the National Mall and all the history therein. Rails to Trails paths in Falls Church were explored. Shenandoah National Park and my new friend Old Rag Mountain gave me my slowest mile - 40 minutes - when it turned into rock climbing instead of running. There were unfulfilled promises of bears on the trails.. The ability to run when I travel allows me to see places and experience things I never would otherwise. Including the possibility of running in to a bear. . . The weekend we got back was the Erwin Park Trail Relay hosted by @teamdirtandvert - The North Texas Trail Parasites took first place in the Men's division. We plan to defend our title at the next race in October. . . "But did you die?" weekend was next. Saturday was a long threshold run per the Frisco Running Club training plan, followed by a bleacher workout hosted by @novemberprojectdallas (get ready for the next one in September!). Sunday was 15 "easy" miles at Erwin Park. Little tired, little hot. . . Mixed in were the "normal" weekday runs with the Frisco Running Club and 5AM Teel Joggers. Easy runs, track workouts, tempo runs... In July, there were even a few consecutive days off from running altogether. Instead of running, I got to make migas early one morning for @reasorfab5 - one of my favorite things to do for my favorite person. . August holds interesting possibilities. We will see what stories the August miles have behind them! . To recap: Saturday - 9+ miles with 40 minutes of threshold intervals (7:00 per mile) mixed in, followed by a @novemberprojectdallas bleacher workout at Toyota Stadium. With a fake trophy at the end. . . Sunday - 15 miles at Erwin park, where we met up with @teamdirtandvert. 3+ hours and got to chase a sunrise. . . Failure. That's what today was. You get to a point in your training where you think you can go out there and everything is guaranteed. That the miles will just happen like they do most days. But I knew going into this one that I should be resting. But I paid no attention to that voice in my head. I laughed at it. I told myself that these miles are nothing and that tomorrow will be even better. But once I got out there a mile in, I knew it was a wrap. I knew I had nothing. I knew I had to finally listen to my body and shut it down. Today was a total failure but tomorrow will not be and neither will the rest of the week. So for now.... Those two miles will just have to stand on their own. And represent what they truly are. A wake up call to listen. To pay attention. Let's go!!!
