PRINCE EDWARD (FUTURE DUKE OF WINDSOR) SEES THE TSAR NICHOLAS II FOR THE FIRST TIME: In 1909, during the reign of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom, Tsar Nicholas II, his family and his entourage visited England. This was the only occasion on which the Prince Edward, later Duke of Windsor (eldest son of future king George V of UK, cousin of Tsar Nicholas II and of Tsarina Alexandra of Russia), met his Russian cousins, including his godfather, the Tsar Nicholas II, who Edward had vaguely seen once when the Tsar visited Balmoral in 1896. The Prince Edward of York, future Edward VIII, then aged 15 and his younger brother, Prince Albert, who became the King George VI, were cadets at the Osborne Naval Academy near Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The two princes were summoned to show the school to visitors, but at the last minute Albert caught a cold, which worsened rapidly, with much cough. The Dr. Botkin (doctor of Romanov family) feared that if Albert passed the flu to Alexei, the cough coulding cause a bleed in the tsarevich. Because of this, Albert was quarantined. "This was the only time I have seen the Tsar Nicholas II”, wrote the Duke of Windsor, recalling the Tsar's visit to England in 1909. "Due to murder plotlines, the imperial government wouldn’t risk the life of the my father in a big metropolis. So they arranged to meet the Romanov family in Cowes, which was a virtually isolated and safe island. Uncle Nicky came to the regatta with the Empress and her numerous childrens aboard the Standart yacht. I remember being perplexed by the elaborate police guard around all of Uncle Nicholas's movements when I went to show him Osborne.” (Photo in the upper left corner of the post above, colored by @wittel_colorizacao). #romanovfamily #nicholasii #romanov #princeofwales #monarchy #britishmonarchy #georgev #kinggeorgev #princeedward #imperialrussia #tsarevichalexei #alexeiromanov #tsar #monarchs #houseofwindsor #unitedkingdon #romanovs #russianmonarchy #tsarevichalexei #tsarinaalexandra #theromanovs #houseofromanov #tsarnicholasii #nicholas2 #edwardviii #dukeofwindsor #kingedwardvii #kingedwardviii #kingofengland

PRINCE PHILLIP AND HIS KINSHIP WITH THE ROMANOVS: Phillip of Edinburgh, consort of Queen Elizabeth II of the UK, has a very close kinship with the Romanovs. These relationships are so close that when the remains of the last imperial family were discovered in the early 1990s, the Prince Phillip was one of the people who provided blood samples to determine the DNA profile of the imperial family. Phillip is the youngest son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and of Princess Alice of Battenberg. His father was the son of King George I of Greece and of Grand Duchess Olga Konstantinovna of Russia. His father's eldest sister, the Princess Alexandra of Greece and Denmark, married in 1889 with the Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich Romanov (uncle of Tsar Nicholas II). This makes Philip the direct cousin of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna and of Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, both children of Grand Duke Paul and of Princess Alexandra of Greece and Denmark. Philip is also the grand-nephew of Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna and of Tsarina Alexandra (wife of Tsar Nicholas II), for his maternal grandmother, Victoria of Hesse-Darmstadt, was the eldest sister of Elizabeth and of Alexandra. The children of Tsar Nicholas II and of Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna were his second cousins. Phillip had often gone on vacation with another important person linked to the Romanov family: the Grand Duke Ernest Louis de Hesse-Darmstadt, brother of Grand Duchess Elizabeth and of Tsarina Alexandra. One of Phillip's sisters, the Princess Cecilia, married with the eldest son of Grand Duke Ernest Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt, the Prince George Donatus. #princephillip #dukeofedinburgh #relatives #theromanovfamily #romanovimperialfamily #romanovs #theromanovs #romanov #britishroyalty #houseofromanov #alexandrafeodorovna #elizabethfeodorovna #romanovchildren #houseofhesse #hessedarmstadt #granddukeernstlouisofhesse #granddukedmitripavlovich #romanovfamily

Part 2.0. “Later pictures of Russia are clearer, and yet they are so hazy as to be enveloped in a glamour so great that in looking back it all appears dreamlike, almost unreal, and I have to make an effort to realize that I was actually there and lived it all, not merely imagined it. The family was a large one. My mother had five brothers living: Alexander, Vladimir, Alexis, Serge and Paul. Her eldest brother Nicholas had died at Nice as quite a young man, of consumption I have been told. Four brothers were already married in the days I am speaking of. In addition there were no end of our uncles, aunts and cousins, so many of them in fact that I never quite made out who they all were, especially as they were of several generations, two or three great-uncles and aunts being still alive. Some were of less importance, uncles, aunts and cousins several times removed, descendants of side lines, but for all big occasions, for feast-days, for parades and church eremonies, the family would flock together, and there would be huge family meetings, a regular review of uncles, aunts and cousins near or far removed, as numerous as trees in a wood. This was most interesting, but also very confusing, as we came almost as strangers into this great family gathering and everybody exclaimed about how much we had grown, etc etc. Nothing could have been a greater contrast than the English and Russian uncles and aunts. I must confess that in my childhood the Russian uncles were surrounded by a much greater glamour. Our admiration for them was not unmixed, however, with dread; they were inveterate teases. The English uncles were absent-minded, they looked through you; the Russian relations never looked through you, they were if anything too aware of your existence and teased you mercilessly; always, on all occasions, public or otherwise, they teased you. It would carry me too far to begin to describe them all, but some of their faces are still so vivid, so full of interest for me at least, that I must draw some of their portraits, make them live once more as I saw them.” Marie of Romania, “The Story of my Life”. THE DISASTROUS GOVERNMENT OF TSARINA ALEXANDRA FEODOROVNA: The departure of Nicholas of Petrograd because of World War I and the his removal from the civil government left a void that the Tsarina Alexandra felt obliged to fill. Leaving the sickbed, she decided to give Russia something that she visibly considered a real autocracy lesson. She didn’t understand anything about how to govern a country. In only four days after Nicholas's departure, she started firing ministers with a huge speed. The entire war effort of the government was transformed into a personal struggle between those whom she considered favorable and those that she considered unfavorable to the entrance of Russia in the war. The ministers who had asked the tsar not to take command of the army were systematically dismissed by the Tsarina. Anyone who suggested that it might be wise to work with the Duma was also fired. Anyone she did not like or who in her opinion opposed it or criticized Rasputin also was dismissed. Her letters to Nicholas were full of references to "our friend" (Rasputin) and of demands for removal from ministers. "How I wish I could hang Rodzianko (the Duma president), a terrible and rather insolent man," she wrote in the letter to Nicholas. She exhorted her husband to be assertive and autocratic. Alexandra dispensed ministers with enormous speed. She wanted that the ministers to have hatred of the Duma and respect for Rasputin. Her favorite minister was Alexander Protopopov, a former representative in the Duma who prospered because of Rasputin and was considered mentally unstable or insane. #tsarina #tsarinaalexandra #tsarinaalexandrafeodorovna #russianmonarchy #russianempire #ww1 #20century #oldhistory #russianhistory #theromanovfamily #romanovimperialfamily #theromanovs #alexandrafeodorovna #romanovdynasty #empressofrussia #empress #ofrussia

The great imperial crown of Russia, of four-kilogram, was made in the year of 1762 for the empress Catherine the Great. In the shape of an episcopal miter, the crwon wore a cross studded with diamonds and with a huge uncut ruby in the center. The support arch below the cross and the contour above the head had 44 diamonds inlaid, each two centimeters wide, surrounded by a solid mass of smaller diamonds. Thirty-eight perfect pink pearls circled the crown on either side of the central arch. #imperialcrown #thecrown #russiancrown #catherinethegreat #romanovdinasty #romanov #crownjewelsofrussia #theromanovs #theromanovfamily #romanovs #beautifulcrown #imperialrussia #royalcrown #crownroyal #romanovdynasty
