#23 CONFLICT - “Increase the Pressure” 12” (‘84, Mortarhate). Conflict is an anarcho-punk band from South London. They started playing together in ‘81. They released their first 7”, “The House that Man Built” in ‘82 on Crass records, followed by the Lp “Its Time to See Who’s Who” and the ep “The Nation of Animal Lovers” on Corpus Christi, also operated by members of Crass. After finding it’s feet, Conflict started its own label, Mortarhate and released their best record to date, the “Increase the Pressure” 12”. I went through a pretty large Anarcho-punk phase when I was younger. Unsurprisingly, very little of this material has aged well. A few bands, like Conflict, have only become more powerful to me with the perspective of age. Colin Jerwood’s vocals are both full of rage and insight, directed at the existence of suffering on a personal, interpersonal, and political level. It was from Conflict that I was first introduced to radical politics and vegetarianism as a 17 year old kid (I somehow got my hands on a copy of the “Ungovernable Force” record - I don’t remember how or why). If you listen to one track, make it “Tough Shit Mickey,” which gets my blood boiling every time.
