Oh heyyyyy! Today I’m doing an introductory visit to the vineyards of Loire Valley’s sub-region Anjou-Saumur. The focus? Savennières - a white wine (typically dry) made from Chenin Blanc. There are 3 AOC’s for Savennières: 1. You guessed it, Savennières! 2. Savennières-Roche-aux-Moines 3. Savennières-Coulée-de-Serrant and they are all located on the north bank of the Loire River. So what do you need to know about Savennières? Most importantly, it’s freakin’ delicious. But in case you’re really interested, here are some of the facts: • Relatively cold climate • Schist soils • Typically fuller bodied than Vouvray and higher in quality and concentration than basic Anjou blanc • High acid • Long-lived wines • Historically known for sweet wines, but nowadays it’s mostly dry . . .
