Mountains here are keeping the traces of World War 2, and the history is literally under your feet. It will not be difficult for you to suddenly stumble upon the remains of the aircraft or even mines - huge pieses of metal are lying breathlessly on the ground, under the sun rays. It's the land of the contrasts! As you carefully walk throug those crumped pieces of metal, the pucture of days gone by start to unfold in front of your eyes: You can see planes approaching this land, and an air battles. You can sence the smoke and hear the engine's hum. People are shouting somewhere near, and suddenly - a huge, earsplitting explosion... You look down on the sea, and freeze in fear - enourmous ships are approaching the harbor. Operation Rösselsprung (Knight's Move) was one of the Kriegsmarine's most successful operations, albeit not as intended. It resulted in the near-annihilation of arctic convoy PQ-17. The original intention was for the major surface ships Tirpitz, Admiral Hipper, Lutzow and Admiral Scheer to intercept and attack an arctic convoy in June 1942. Tirpitz, Hipper and escorts would sail from Trondheim, Lutzow, Scheer and escorts from Narvik. PQ17 sailed for Russia from Iceland on 27th June but was not detected by the forward U-boat cordon until 1st July. Tirpitz and Hipper left Trondheim late on 2nd July, Lutzow and Scheer left Narvik around midday on the 3rd. Unfortunately for the German squadrons, the Norwegian fjords are notoriously difficult to navigate; three of the Tirpitz group's destroyers ran aground, and Lutzow also ran onto rocks and retired from the operation. The remaining vessels arrived at Altenfjord on 4th July. Ironically, despite not having fired a shell and having four of their own ships put out of action through grounding, the fact that the Tirpitz had set sail was enough for the British Admiralty to take the fateful decision to instruct convoy PQ-17 to scatter. Without the mutual protection of the convoy system the merchantmen were sitting ducks. Over the next six days, twenty ships would be sunk by aircraft and U-boats. The instruction to scatter the convoy remains controversial and much debated to this day, and resulted in the loss of twenty ships, their valuable cargoes and brave civilian crews. Realising the convoy was scattering and easy pickings were to be had, Tirpitz, Hipper and Scheer sailed again from Altenfjord at 1500hrs on the 5th July. Six hours later they were steaming back to the shelter of Altenfjord, having been spotted by British recon aircraft and a submarine. Admiral Raeder, concerned they were sailing into a trap, ordered the squadron back to port. Thus ended Operation Rösselsprung; 20 merchantmen sunk without the surface fleet firing a shot. The German heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper was part of the Kriegsmarine (German fleet) in WW2. The ship was named after Admiral Franz von Hipper the commander of the German fleet (Deutsche Hochseeflotte) in WW1. When the war began in 1939 the Admiral Hipper was in the Baltic see to be tested. In February of 1940 the ship made a short advance in the North see together with the battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau (operation Nordmark). The ship was also part of operation Weserübung, Juno and Regenbogen. In the end the ship was blown up by the Germans.
