Eunhee Park, North Korean refugees, shares how TNKR helped her learn English and inspired her to help others.
In 2015, she joined TNKR speaking English at an ABC level. Less than four years later, she gave a speech at Asia Liberty Forum, a TEDx Talk in Seoul, and won TNKR's competitive English speech contest.

Sitting in front of Scott Kim, a 32-year-old North Korean defector who escaped the country 4 times, I was struck by the ridiculous expectations I have as a journalist.
.
Having met this man five minutes prior, I expected him to tell me, with unflinching honesty and harrowing detail, the tragedies he has endured.
.
When, earlier in the day, another defector I spoke to seemed little interested in talking about her time in North Korea, I complained to Casey Lartigue, the affable founder of @teachnkrefugees ,who had arranged the meeting. “But you only just met!” he said, laughing.
.
In my conversation with that defector, she said that she had not told many friends in Korea that she was a defector. When she told one friend over coffee, the woman leaned forward, touched her hand, and said, “Honey, you don’t have to tell me everything about yourself.”
.
I was incredulous at this: Wasn’t being a defector a core part of her life? I saw this as the woman gently telling the defector to hide herself, lest she face a stigma in Korea’s hyper-competitive society, where any blemish can damage your social/professional prospects.
.
When I posed this to Lee Eun-koo, TNKR’s co-founder, she suggested a different perspective. “Perhaps, what her friend meant was that it wasn’t important to her that she was a defector. That she saw her simply as another person,” she said.
.
Too often, all we want of defectors, survivors, and veterans is to hear their stories of survival. From our comfortable perch, we live vicariously through their struggles.
.
Too often, we care little when all they want is to talk about a first date, a new job, or, in Kim’s case, a business he had just launched trading automobile and railway parts.
.
And, yet, people like Kim keep telling their story because they know that it doesn’t matter *why* we are listening.
So many people are still suffering such unthinkable pain, the only thing that matters is that the story is told. And that, maybe, one more person is moved to do something.
.
Thank you Scott Kim for telling me a story I had not earned the right to hear. Follow link in the bio if you want to listen.
