On this day in 1851, Sojourner Truth delivered her famous “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech at the Women’s Rights Convention in Ohio. [Performed here by actress Alfre Woodard] _____________ Truth spoke about the crisis affecting Black people in the United States, especially the dehumanization that afflicts Black women daily. Her speech was intersectional in that it vividly demonstrated how race and gender-based oppression work in tandem to create harrowing conditions for Black women. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ TODAY in Black Film History LOUIS GOSSETT Born May 27, 1936 Brooklyn, NY ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Louis Gossett turned to acting as a teenager after an injury tsidelined him from playing basketball. While in high school, he made his Broadway debut in Take a Giant Step (1953) and received the Donaldson Award for Best Newcomer to theatre. Upon graduating in 1954, he received a basketball scholarship to New York University but turned it down to fully dedicate himself to acting as a career. Gossett studied at the Actors Studio and appeared again on Broadway in Lorraine Hansberry’s Raisin in the Sun (1959) with Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Claudia McNeil, Diana Sands and Ivan Dixon, all who would reprise their roles for the Columbia Pictures film version in 1961. Gossett has appeared in almost two hundred films and television shows. Some memorable roles include: The Bushbaby (1969), The Landlord (1970), Skin Game (1971), The River Niger (1976), Don’t Look Back: The Story of Leroy “Satchel” Paige (1981), Sadat (1983), Enemy Mine (1985), A Gathering of Old Men (1987), The Principal (1987), Carolina Skeletons (1991), and Lackawana Blues (2005). Gossett received an Emmy Award for his portrayal of “Fiddler” in Alex Haley’s miniseries Roots (1977). He won a Golden Globe Award for HBO’s The Josephine Baker Story (1991) and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Sergeant Emil Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman (1982). Gibbs began acting in the 1970s blaxploitation films Sweet Jesus Preacher Man, and Black Belt Jones but quickly found her popularity on television in shows such as The Love Boat, 227, Pryor’s Place, The Fresh Prince of Belair, The Hughleys, and The First Family, among dozens of others. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ TODAY in Black Film History BILLY DEE WILLIAMS Born April 6, 1937 New York, NY ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Billy Dee Williams made his film debut in 1959 in The Last Angry Man opposite Paul Muni, as Josh Quincy, a rebellious neighborhood teen. He rose to stardom after the critically acclaimed sports drama Brian’s Song (1971) in which he played Chicago Bears football player Gale Sayers who stood by his friend, teammate Brian Piccolo (James Caan), during his struggle with terminal cancer. With the film’s success, Williams became one of America’s most well known black film actors. In 1972, he starred as Billie Holiday’s husband, Louis McKay, in Motown Production’s biopic Lady Sings opposite Diana Ross as the troubled jazz singer. Other 1970s appearances of note included Mahogany (1975) a romantic fashion drama in which he again was paired with Ross, The Take (1974), The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings (1976) the baseball comedy with James Earl Jones and Richard Pryor, and Scott Joplin (1977), a made-for-tv musical biography on the famed ragtime composer. By the 1980s, Williams became best known for playing Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars franchise: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). Their debut feature film Menace II Society, the story of a black youth trapped in the destructive, drug-driven culture of his Los Angeles neighborhood, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival when they were only twenty years old.
