I had a new client last week who presented with a passive limitation in hip external rotation. I explained to him the importance of passive range of motion as a prerequisite for active range of motion ⚖️. He appeared puzzled... then replied: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hovers are used to train a joint INTO its active end-range. The objective here is to flex the knee independently from the rest of the body.

Some common compensation I see in practice include:

❌ Shifting the body forward
❌ Leaning forward and flexing the hip.

Cueing at the foot and hip can help increase irradiation of the regressive tissue and promote ISOLATED knee flexion. Some examples of cues I use include:

I found this to be a great mid-to-high Level II CAR. It’s a very safe, easy and comfortable base position for almost anyone - “Side-lying Quadruped”. The wall and floor provides great tactile feedback to eliminate compensation through the upper body and opposite leg. You feel VERY locked in . It gives the pelvis and opposite knee a little wiggle room to contribute, which is a nice short leash for those who aren’t quite ready for strict Level III CARs .
