The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius (Троице-Сергиева Лавра) is situated in the town of Sergiyev Posad, about 70 km to the north-east from Moscow. On Feb 21, 1598, Boris Godunov became the #tsar of #Russia, ending the Rurik Dynasty. He had been the virtual ruler after the death of Ivan the Terrible. Godunov proved to be capable: during his reign, relations with the West strengthened and the Russian Orthodox Church was recognized as a patriarchate. But it also ushered in the Time of Troubles with emergence of False Dmitry's, which would ultimately lead to the establishment of the Romanov Dynasty. Godunov was the subject of a play by #Pushkin and an opera by #Mussorgsky.
