Born in 1944 North Carolina, Woody Shaw moved with his parent to New Jersey while he was a kid. He studied classical trumpet at the Juilliard School, but jazz was in his blood and young Woody wanted to be Louis Armstrong, his first influence. He enrolled in the same performing art school as Wayne Shorter in New Jersey and began performing jazz at clubs and weddings. He kept studying jazz trumpet listening to Lee Morgan or Freddie Hubbard.
In the early 1960’s, Shaw went to Paris to perform with Eric Dolphy. He settled in the French capital for a few years and met Bud Powell and Dexter Gordon. He came back to the US to become a Blue Note records trumpet session artist. He then work wit a large palette of musicians, Corea, Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, and Max Roach.
Rich of his gigs with so many, Bobby Shaw began a solo career. He could play complex “Coltranian” phrases, or romantic and lyrical jazz like the last recording he made in 1987 “Imagination”.
Two years later, in general poor health, made worse by years of drug use, Woody had an accident and later died at the hospital. He was only 44.
From Imagination, the cut is the album title with Steve Turre on trombone, Carl Allen on drums, Kirk Lightsey on piano and Ray Drummond on bass.
