. . .
We had watched these turkeys for about an hour and a half on the other side of the field. When we scouted them, they walked right down the tree line to where we were set up every time. Of course on opening day they were content to hang out and strut for some hens about 300 yards from us. We could only see a couple birds from where we were sitting but after getting antsy, I slowly stood up and looking through my binoculars realized there were five strutting toms and at least that many hens. After some deliberation, we decided that Caleb and I would belly crawl across the field with the jake decoy in front of us and Roy would film what I was sure would be the ruin of this hunt. After crawling about 75 yards we crested the rise in the hill and the three closest toms saw our decoy. They began slowly making their way towards us and Caleb decided to stake the decoy in the ground and we both laid down behind it. The toms had the advantage in numbers against this interloper and they knew it. You could almost see the mob mentality build between them as they got closer and picked up speed until they were nearly running to fight this intruder to their territory. At 20 yards, Caleb counted down 3,2,1...and we both pulled the trigger. The left bird flopped over at Caleb’s shot but my trigger didn’t move. I knew I had clicked the safety off but the trigger was frozen in place. I quickly shucked another shell hoping that the first shell was somehow a dud but again the trigger wouldn’t move. Caleb was in my ear saying “take my gun! take my gun!” I finally grabbed it and fortunately the toms were so fired up they stuck around still looking for a fight. This gave me a third chance in about ten seconds to shoot a bird. The gun went off and our opening day double was sealed as one of our most memorable hunts, made that much sweeter by Roy getting the whole hunt on film.
Nebraska's shotgun turkey season opens this weekend. We will be out on public land chasing a few Tom's around and trying to capture some footage like this!
