Sealed for Eternity. The unbroken seal of King Tutankhamun’s tomb is pictured above. Tied and secured over 3,245 years ago by the immortal priests who buried him. Howard Carter, who famously discovered King Tut’s tomb in 1922 would of been greeted by this ancient seal. Carter, who was accompanied by Lord Carnarvon was speechless as he shunted the heavy door open and peered inside. Carnarvon, unable to bear the suspense whispered to Carter “Can you see anything?” To which Carter famously replied “Yes, wonderful things.” What was found inside the tomb was the most splendid display of Ancient Egyptian artefacts ever discovered up to that point. Through another small door lay the most famous treasure of all - Tutankhamun himself. Encased in no fewer than three coffins, the innermost of which is made of solid gold. Carter also found 6 chariots, 2 thrones, 139 staffs made from an assortment of different precious materials, ornaments, lamps, caskets, musical instruments, gilded statues, a vast assortment of jewellery and several shrines. The list goes on and on. I wonder if Howard Carter felt any guilt when he severed the ancient seal to King Tut’s tomb? Canopic Chest of Tutankhamun Tutankhamun's alabaster canopic chest, designed to hold the organs removed during mummification in four separate jars (each of which were contained within an exquisite miniature gilded coffin). Traditionally the four canopic jars in Egyptian tombs have lids carved with the heads of the four sons of Horus (each of which was guardian to a separate organ) but in Tutankhamun's case all four bear delightful miniature alabaster portrait heads of the young king himself.
