Jamal Boyce was skateboarding when he was #CARDED and aggressively handled and handcuffed for two hours on a busy campus street last week. When he tried to walk away after they asked for ID that he did not have on him, they hit his phone to the ground as he tried to record the incident. When the crowd that had gathered pointed out a white kid who cruised by on a board and was not arrested, the security guard responded “Oh, well, he’s not doing tricks.” Jamal was targeted – this was not a coincidence. Members of our community have been skating on this campus for years; it’s a common way for students to get around from class to class. The actions and subsequent response from #uOttawa is absolutely shameful and we as a community must demand they do better and address systemic racism within their institution. Skateboarding is for everyone, and we value its inclusivity. It’s important to stand up for racialized and marginalized folks in our community who have far greater consequences to their safety for skating in public spaces. We stand with Jamal.
