The iconic San Francisco cable car system is the world's last manually operated cable car system. In 1869, Andrew Smith Hallidie witnessed an accident that inspired the idea for a cable car system in San Francisco. Sadly a streetcar drawn by horses over wet cobblestones slid backwards, killing the horses. He got to work immediately & in 1892 the first cable car system in San Francisco began operation. The cable cars are pulled by a cable running within a track below the street. Hallidie's successful patents were enforced on other cable car promoters but the fire resulting from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed the power houses & car barns. A majority of the cable car lines were replaced by city owned overhead electric traction cars. By 1912, only 8 cable car lines remained & were soon matched by the much improved buses of the era that could now climb steeper hills. Only 3 cable cars remained by 1944. The cable car system fell through many hardships but people did not want the beloved system to be shut down & fought to keep it running. After two attempts from the city to close the lines, company bankruptcy, repurchase from the city, and 2 full rebuilds by June 21, 1984, the system fully reopened. Of the 23 lines established between 1873-90, only three remain; two routes from downtown near Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf, and a third route along California Street.
