Sunrise poking thru after an all night snowstorm in Lofoten from a few months ago. I've said that sunrise is my favorite light of the day, but I'm starting to realize that I actually like the light which comes directly after a storm a whole lot more.

Several months ago, I was toiling with the idea of pursuing photography full time. I could do it and survive, albeit, it would be a definite struggle at first. I thought about it long and hard.. pros and cons etc. I had several talks with my fiancé, mom & dad, and my siblings. I’ve decided to keep it a hobby—my ultimate passion, that continually provides me with sincere joy. To help aid in this decision, I reflected back on a conversation I had several years ago with a fellow artist who had some pretty amazing words of wisdom. The conversation revolved around getting caught up in the excitement of discovering something new and invigorating, and instantly trying to find a way to make a living doing it.. I’m glad I waited..five years now. It all boiled down to keeping my art free and pure; freelancing here and there, but not relying on an image for licensing, selling prints, brick and mortar gallery etc to survive. Don’t get me wrong, that can work for a lot of people..just not me. I want to keep it as pure as I can. I don’t ever want to spoil one of the great things that brings incredible joy in my life. Not worth the risk. At the end of the day, work is work. There’s not many things in this life I’ve experienced that really compares to the joy of creating and expressing individualized art. I’ll keep it just that. I’ll also continue to sell prints here and there to those who request, submit images to magazines, and sell and image license or two as well. I just enjoy being in the field shooting-where I want, and when I want. No ties, deadlines, or stress. Just the freedom to express and nothing more. Sappy philosophical rant over. This evening was probably the best grizzly bear encounter of the spring season. The combination of a great subject and great light led to an incredible photographic opportunity that doesn’t happen very often. There was no crowd and the bears were able to do whatever they wanted without interference. Pretty much everyone stayed in their cars, which allowed the mother to take advantage of the best grass right by the road.
