This spiraling staircase in Museo Pio-Clementino of Musei Vaticani in Vatican City is a double helix which provides two different routes up and down the museum. Named Bramante Staircase, it is a 20th-century remake of another double helix also located in the museum, which was designed by Donato Bramante in 1505. Although the modern version is a true attention magnet incorporating ornate railings lit up under the daylight descending down from a glass canopy, the story of the original version strikes people as more intriguing. Part of the Cortile del Belvedere, the staircase allowed direct access to Pope’s residence, and even carriages were able to climb it. Vatican City @capra311

Designed by Donato Bramante in 1506, the Courtyard with its Nicchione tower it is a masterpiece of Renaissance achitecture. While the space is rivaled in prestige by many other architectural spaces in the Vatican Museums, the Bramante Courtyard is undoubtedly its heart. Restoration of the four walls of the Bramante Courtyard commenced in 2016. The restoration labor has been completed on the Nicchione and is well underway on the Braccio Nuovo. Work will commence on the West Wall pilot section in the coming months. The East Wall of the Chiaramonti Gallery and the West Wall of the Vatican Library are still in need of funding. Yes, this is what the #Vatican Gallery of Maps looks like when it is empty!⁣ A lot of you have commented on my stories today as I visited the Vatican Museums in what I'm convinced is the best way possible: the folks at @musement told me about this pre-opening, VIP ticket and tour that gets you in at 7:30am. We had a hilarious guide named Edoardo on this fast-track tour that heads straight for the Sistine Chapel so you're one of the first groups in at 8am, but as a PhD in archaeology and real lover of #Michelangelo, he couldn't resist showing us highlights along the way. It was incredible! In the Chapel it was peaceful and all the seats were available so I could sit there til my neck hurt too much. I then traced my way back to the Pinacoteca and did the whole museum from start to end. There are 40 maps on the walls, representing the Italian regions and the papal properties at the time of Pope Gregory XIII (1572-1585).
