He is selling water to his two customers. One has faded into the background, the other is just accepting a freshly poured glass. Somehow it looks cool and refreshing. There is even a fig in it to give it some flavour. Water sellers did not make a lot of money, and it shows. He is clearly poor. His clothing is rough and torn, his face shows the wrinkles of age and a hard life with to much exposure to the elements. He barely pays attention to the transaction at hand. His mind is elsewhere. This is not a man enjoying his work. It is a strange scene for a painting. There is no Biblical or mythological story here. There seems to be no moral lesson to be learned. And even stranger, nothing in this picture is pretty. Still, it is hard to look away because the whole is so beautiful. There is a depth in the perception of the painter. We can see the hardness of the life of the older man and the contrast it forms with his young client. But most of all it is the light on ordinary objects. That rough earthenware jug in the front with the glistening drops of water dripping off the side. It all somehow fits into a sort of harmony that makes it so unforgettable. Tomorrow afternoon, for the second time in my life, I’ll stand in front of this masterpiece in The Prado Museum, Madrid. - ‘Las Meninas’ (which is Spanish for The Ladies in Waiting’) was created by Diego Velázquez in 1656. Velázquez was the greatest artist of the Spanish Golden Age. This painting is one of the most complex and widely discussed and analysed pictures in the world. - The painting shows a large room in the Royal Alcazar of Madrid during the reign of King Philip IV of Spain, and presents several figures, most identifiable from the Spanish court, captured, according to some commentators, in a particular moment as if in a snapshot. Some look out of the canvas towards the viewer, while others interact among themselves. The young Infanta Margaret Theresa is surrounded by her entourage of maids of honour, chaperone, bodyguard, two dwarfs and a dog. Just behind them, Velázquez portrays himself working at a large canvas. Velázquez looks outwards, beyond the pictorial space to where a viewer of the painting would stand. In the background there is a mirror that reflects the upper bodies of the king and queen. They appear to be placed outside the picture space in a position similar to that of the viewer, although some scholars have speculated that their image is a reflection from the painting Velázquez is shown working on.
