Enucleations are another favorite surgery of mine. • • ❤️Lacy came to see me after her owner saw a decrease in her quality of life from glaucoma that was unresponsive to treatment. Even after doing tons of these I am always so surprised how much happier the pets seem after the painful eye is gone. It is a rewarding procedure. • • ‼️ Here are some TIPS and tricks I have learned. 1️⃣Suture the eyelids together to clamp and pull up on as you dissect the eye out. 2️⃣Have an extra set of hands to help with positioning. 3️⃣Prepare yourself for a fair amount of bleeding. The eye is very vascular. 4️⃣Clamp, cut, and then ligate the optic artery. It’s easier with the eye gone. 5️⃣Pack the eye with dilute betadine soaked brown gauze. Leave a bit hanging out the corner of your incision. Pull it out the next day. It fills the space and allows for quicker clotting. 6️⃣Keep them overnight! Enucleations always look worse the next day. Make sure they are comfortable and the swelling is controlled prior to discharge. 7️⃣Place an e-collar on them as soon as they recover. • • Some surgeons twist the eye to ligate the artery. I haven’t tried it but I am interested in hearing if #veterinarians like that technique. • • Reminder: I am not a #surgeon. I just do a lot of these and this is what works for me. Any questions!
