Did you know.... A vet has performed intricate surgery on a dying goldfish in Australia which was suffering from a life-threatening head tumour. The 10-year-old goldfish, named George, was admitted to an animal hospital in Melbourne by its owners, who were "quite attached" to the fish. Dr Tristan Rich, the vet, said the 45-minute operation on the 80-gram fish had been "quite fiddly". He had offered the owners the option of attempting to remove the tumour or putting George to sleep; they chose the former. "The fish was having trouble eating, getting around and he was getting bullied by other fish," said Dr Rich. "It was quite a large tumour – we had to scrape it off his skull. When it was all done we woke him up in a clean bucket of water." During the surgery, water from George's pond was brought in buckets and fed into a tube through his mouth to keep his gills wet. The fish was operated while under general anaesthetic, which was achieved by putting George in buckets of water laced with anaesthetic. ⭐️What did I do to prepare for vet school apps? . Education: I was not a good student in high school so I went to community college to make myself more competitive and save money. I spent 4 years in cc and transferred to UCLA where I spent another 2 years. Volunteering: I volunteered at a humane society, equestrian center, and 2 vet hospitals (later landed jobs in these 2). Work: I worked in two vet hospitals (both small animal). One was a general practice and the other was a spay/neuter clinic. I was also a waitress for a couple of years (didn’t enjoy it but it taught me patience and strengthened multi-tasking skills). Research: I got course credit for working in a lab for 2 years in undergrad. Grades: When my cc and undergrad GPAs were combined, I ended up around a 3.6. GRE: I got below average on all sections (can’t remember my score, but definitely not competitive). Vet school apps: I applied to 7 different schools around the country. Got rejected from half. When I got accepted to my top preference, I rejected all other interviews and went with my gut. . Something I learned while trying to get into vet school is that you’ll get discouraged a lot, but that’s normal. It’s hard to find places that will take you to get your hours in, but when someone says no, just keep looking. When professors don’t have hope in you, ignore them and move on. When toxic hospital work environments make you want to quit your dream, look for a new hospital. Also, find time to have fun while you’re preparing for vet school and once you’re in. .
