Gingival mass in a 12 y/o mixed breed dog. A small (< 1 cm) mass was noted during the dental procedure. Fine needle aspiration reveals sheets of cohesive epithelial cells with few neutrophils. The epithelial cells display mild anisocytosis and anisokaryosis. Occasionally, they appear more cuboidal with higher N:C ratios (upper right corner of the first picture). A 300-cell differential count reveals 90% neoplastic round cells, 4% macrophages, 3% non-degenerate neutrophils, and 3% small lymphocytes (not shown). The neoplastic cells are approximately 20-30 um, have high N:C ratios, and contain a small to moderate amount of deep blue, vacuolated cytoplasm. Their nuclei are typically highly lobulated, with fewer oval to reniform shapes observed. Frequent mitotic figures are noted. ・・・ Interpretation: neoplastic effusion. Blood smear in a young #FeLV (+) cat. PCV: 7%, WBC: 5.9K/uL, PLT: 14K/uL. WBC differential count reveals 57% other cells that are large and round with one single, round to slightly polygonal nucleus (size comparison available at the upper right corner). Many cells have dusting of fine, magenta cytoplasmic granules. These findings are most compatible with #hematopoietic #leukemia. A #lymphoid origin is the primary consideration, but flow cytometry is needed to further characterize the cells. In addition, aspiration or biopsy of any external or internal enlarged lymph nodes, spleen, liver, any internal masses, or bone marrow is recommended. A perfect case to learn how to identify different types of cells in canine pleural effusion. A dog with history of UCC. Pleural fluid was collected two weeks post RT. I labeled Neut (#neutrophils), Mac (#macrophages), Meso (#mesothelial cells), and N (#neoplastic cells) for you to identify. Base on a 300-cell count, we got 48% non-degenerate neutrophils, 24% macrophages, 19% neoplastic cells, 6% mesothelial cells, and 3% lymphocytes (not shown). Interpretation: neoplastic effusion. #Carcinoma is the primary consideration.
