Earlier this month I had the pleasure to take part in the Pritzker Forum on Global Cities in Chicago. I was invited to the “Outside the Gallery” panel, alongside Sarah Herda, Director at @grahamfoundation and Mark Davy, @futurecityblog founder and CEO, with moderation by Caroline Daniel, Partner at @brunswickgroup. I believe in the importance of building bridges between galleries, museums and the public space, towards the democratisation of art and had a great time taking part in this exchange of ideas towards a more creative society. Algo que hoje nos transmite tudo aquilo que somos ou queremos ser através de comunicação no espaço público? Ou algo que nos transmite cultura e identidade? Algo que nos protege? Ou algo que nos afasta? Algo que nos dá? Ou que nos tira? ⁣⠀ É tudo isso, na sua ambiguidade, e apenas será mais do que isso, quando a língua de Camões for de quem a fala hoje e não de quem a criou. A intenção desta obra é criar uma justaposição entre o passado e o futuro da utilização da imagem e da palavra de modo a expor uma época onde uma ponte se criou ou uma ferida se abriu.⁣⠀ -⠀⁣⠀ What is the meaning of a language nowadays? Is it something that creates bridges? Something that imposed itself? Something that brings us together? Something that stimulates economic growth and the interest in creating a larger market? Something that facilitates cultural exchange? Something that exploits or has exploited? Something that today transmits everything we are or want to be through communication in the public space? Or something that conveys culture and identity? Something that protects us? Or something that drives us away? Something that gives? Or something that takes away?⁣⠀ It is all of this, in its ambiguity, and it will only be more than this, once the language of Camões, the Portuguese language, belongs to those who speak it today and not to those who created it.
