(Painting ‘Girl reading’, by Iain Faulkner, UK.) . Stormy weather yesterday evening, my friends: thunder and lightning and heavy rains pouring horizontally across my window. So a fine night it was to let my brain probe into the depths of the artist’s mind. . I thought about the many visits i have paid lately to painter’s studios, and the things i read - in letters (Thomas Wolfe, writer), novels (Mercedes Helnwein, painter, writer) and in scientific reports (Shirley Heath, anthropologist, who interviewed thousands of readers). And i wondered: what is it that turns someone into a painter, a writer… even a reader? What do they have in common? . Well, i think i might have a clue, and i wrote an article about it. There’s this whole crazy world out there, and then the one in our heads (even crazier) and i wonder which is more beautiful? Or wait… On the other hand… No, i don’t wonder, because i know the answer. The crazy world out there only brings in the raw material, the stuff beauty is made from. The beauty factory is in our heads. . And sometimes a sentence, or an image, brings on another one. Like “She looks as if she’s ready to massacre a whole chicken coop.”, a sentence i just came to bump into while reading the 3rd part of ‘The Longing’, Eduardo Riccardo’s short story we’re exclusively publishing on our blog (UntitledXXI&Friends.com, link above). The line took me straight away to the girl in this Mercedes Helnwein painting. She’s sitting at the front, second to the right. She’s holding a guitar, as everybody else does. (They do this because this painting is called Kids and Guitars i guess.) And, indeed, she looks as if she’s ready to massacre a whole chicken coop. . Mercedes Helnwein is amazing. The way she plays with images (paintings, photos) and text… So funny. If I could freely choose ten people in the world to have a word with, Mercedes would always be amongst them. She’s so funny and outrageously talented. About the above painting she writes: “I’ve named the pissed-off girl in the front Denise. I feel like she’s going to get her revenge on someone and won’t hold back.” . Delicious.

This girl… She’s so… right. . Sorry. New start. This girl… She tells me a lot. That we shouldn’t be angry at each other all the time. We just shouldn’t. Why? Well: because it’s not anybody’s fault. . It’s not ‘their’ fault. And not ours either. And it certainly isn’t yours. So, it’s nobody’s fault, actually. It’s… just the way it is. Most of the time it just doesn’t fit, that’s all. . Don’t get me wrong, my friends, sometimes it does fit. Sometimes! Very rarely, but - it does. . Then it’s magic. This girl, above… . No, wait. Another example. When i started reading Fante i knew “this fits”. I didn’t know why. I just felt it. Book after book the fitting unveiled itself. Unpacked. Often i thought “hey, this-cannot-be-true…”. First, i read he was the son of a bricklayer. Hm, what a coincidence, i thought – i’m one too. Then: ‘He always walked with determination and purpose, going nowhere.’ Ever seen me walking? That indeed is the way i walk. ‘My face was as freckled as a bird’s egg.’ Mine is 2 bird’s eggs. His father drunk and smoked himself to death. Big mouth, poor heart. His mother: a saint. Etcetera... . But, all this i knew from the first sentence. Magic… . It’s just there, from the beginning – or it’s not. So let’s not be angry if it’s not. It’s just the way it is. . Back to the girl in the painting. I look at her and i think “that’s my kinda girl”. Why? Again- i have no idea. Maybe it’s her eyes. She’s got this half crazy look - the same all my exes had. Women with a (half) crazy look are a magnet to me. And sometimes vice versa. Her hairdo: oh-my-god. Her mouth: ‘Frankly, mister Shankly…’ Disarmed? I am. Not to mention the politically incorrect way she’s holding her cigarette. She won’t ask you twice to light it, oh no. I know this kind. “You don’t light it? Okay.” . As i said: it’s just the way it is. And, on top of all that, the painter is called Mercedes Helnwein. I mean - a fairytale. So: more about her soon... . Our blog launches on Sunday, my friends!
