Let’s talk stares. Let me tell you about having a child with visible difference... EVERYONE LOOKS. Some glance some stare and some even stop dead in their tracks to turn around and stare more. I’ve thought a lot about this all week because honestly I wasn’t entirely prepared. Something beautiful also happened though the woman at the arcade gave Anna a bunch of extra tickets (just because), the man at the gift shop gave Anna a special discount (just because). And a woman came up with a stuffed animal that she said her two boys told her she needed to buy for Anna (just because). You may never know the difference you make in someone’s life, but maybe do it anyway (just because) it may just be what they needed to restore their faith in humanity. I wasn’t entirely prepared for their stares but because of those extra special people I chose to believe they were staring out of love maybe concern, but definitely nothing bad. #justbecause #kindness #love #visibledifference #bethechange

“May is #ichthyosisawareness month and I have a lot planned. I am asking you to help me make all of my ideas a success, because even though some of us choose to live in the public the fact remains that most people with any #visibledifference end up hiding. Hiding because it’s easier, hiding because their scared, hiding because the looks and questions can become overwhelming. I broke the day Anna was born and soon after I made a decision to go public because I needed her to know that it was just skin. She needs to understand that letting something like this hold her back is a choice and hopefully one she won’t make. I never knew that in the process I would start to heal. I didn’t know that others in the Ichthyosis community would treat me as if we were friends for years and help me mend. My goal for anna is for her to look in the mirror one day and see her difference as a gift, and have her love her skin because it makes her so special. My goal for the Ichthyosis community is to help. Help get supplies insurance won’t cover, help people have the confidence to boldly be who they are and love themselves for it. Autism and puberty are a painful combination. We’ve been struggling for a while now. Harry has no understanding of the changes and hormones raging through his body. He’s unpredictable and violent at home, in his taxi and at school but there are few blogs for parents like me to find advice in because to share our experiences means we have to sacrifice some of our children’s privacy. I could tell you so much. But I don’t. And that respect for our children and the related silence means that so many parents of autistic teens feel as lost and alone as we did right at the beginning. Today Harry is not good. Not even a birthday badge and a bag of cakes for his class have made him smile. He is torn between hugging me and ferociously hitting himself and it breaks my heart. The people that have come before us have paved the way in the medical field but also in other ways. When someone does something that is thought to be impossible it suddenly becomes obtainable for all of the people behind them. @stephuncut was a person who lived everyday the way I hope and pray Anna will one day. Although the very real possibility that my beautiful baby might not live longer than me is always in the back of my mind I hope every day that she lives like Stephanie did. Stephanie died shortly before Anna was born and I was crushed when I found out, but then I found her IG and even though she isn’t here I go there often and take strength from the woman she was. Her bond with her mother reminds me so much of my own relationship with Anna and the day Stephanie decided to break all rules and have a baby is the day the #harlequinichthyosis community changed. I hope she realizes that she changed lives and continues to do so every day.
