Fulmar for scale These waterfalls absolutely dwarfed everything. The sheer volume of water that powered down made each bird look miniscule. It was amazing to watch them flying across, from cliff face to cliff face, as though they were playing in the spray of the water. Something so simple but so beautiful to watch.

Lupini ed Islanda. Ho scattato questa foto nell'area del parco di Skaftafell. Se siete stati in Islanda in estate avrete certamente visto dei campi di fiori lilla che svettano alti e numerosi. Quelle, signore e signori, sono piante di Lupino. Non sono native dell'Islanda: sono state importate nel 1945 nel tentativo di contrastare l'erosione del suolo. In effetti, questi lupini aiutano a tenere il suolo lì dove dovrebbe stare (e questo è utile, in un'isola vulcanica, con una terra poco compatta che viene spazzata dai venti) ed aiuta pure a fertilizzare, considerando la loro capacità di catturare il nitrogeno nell'aria e diffonderlo nel suolo attraverso le radici, condividendolo con le piante vicine. PERÒ sono dannatamente invasivi e nel tempo stanno mettendo a rischio i muschi ed i licheni autoctoni togliendo loro luce a causa della loro altezza, decisamente maggiore rispetto a quella della flora tipica islandese.
