One of the first photos I took when starting out on my photography journey. Found this tree one morning along the south coast of @visitnsw. I will be seeing this tree in a few months when I do a photography trip up the south coast. I’ll be starting in Melbourne and making my way up to Sydney, then onto the Sunshine Coast. It’ll be interesting to see how far I’ve come in two years. Looking forward to it! .

Category: tried something new. You may know that I shoot with a 6 year old camera (crop sensor) which doesn’t have the best low light / high ISO performance and that my lens isn’t calibrated properly so I can’t get stars 100% in focus (not too noticeable here on Insta). Obviously at some point I’m going to buy new gear once I know what I want but until then I have to live with it. That’s why I didn’t shoot a timelapse when I went to Bombo due to the amount of photographers that keep their torches on or need to lightpaint the rocks even when there is moonlight coming from behind them. I still shot a bunch of images without moving my camera but rather than using it for a timelapse, I stacked them to create more detail in the Milky Way and reduce noise in the foreground.
Improving my astro editing skills is something I need to work on until I have new gear and this is the first astro image I created using a few new tools. I’m still learning so although it may not look that natural, it was a high step forward in my astro journey:
Here is what I did: I used the median filter in Photoshop to merge 17 images for the foreground which reduced noise and removed any torches walking through the shot. For the Milky Way I used the 17 shots and stacked them in Sequator for more detail. What made the biggest difference here was the ‘reduce light pollution’ function which really brought out the nebulae in the Milky Way – something I’ve never thought would be possible with my camera. It struggled with the light near the horizon so I just moved the MW down by 10%. Can’t wait to re-edit all my old astro shots with this technique.
