The second post in the Transitional Fossils series is the Devonian fish Tiktaalik roseae, the poster-child of tetrapod evolution - The most unusual feature of Tiktaalik is its fins. This would have allowed it to prop itself up on land, and drag itself across bodies of dry land to reach lakes and potentially spawning grounds. Another “Fishapod” feature is a half fish, half tetrapods ear region. Tiktaalik possesses fish gills, scales and fins, whereas it has tetrapod rib bones, lungs, a mobile neck and separate pectoral girdle - It’s worth noting that footprints in the Holy Cross Mountains in Poland show tetrapod presence as early as 427.4 million years ago, whereas Tiktaalik is ‘only’ 375 million years old. This means that there are ghost lineages of animals that evolved terrestrial locomotion long before Tiktaalik and other elpistostegalians. So this particular group of fish were "late-surviving relics rather than direct transitional forms", as a result of either convergent or parallel evolution. 1k followers special series 4th favourite prehistoric animal Leptictidium tobieni “Graceful Weasel” Mid Eocene- 50-35 million years ago Possibly invalid order of placental mammals (Leptictida) - Leptictidium tobieni is the largest species of the genus, measuring about 90cm long. Originally described in 1987 and hailing from the Messel Pit in Germany, the holotype specimen is a perfectly preserved adult individual. This particular species has a more robust mandible compared to other Leptictidium species. Stomach contents from Leptictidium species show that it was omnivorous, feeding on insects, leaves, lizards and small mammals. It lived in European subtropical forests. - How it moved is a prominent question when regarding Leptictidium: wether it ran or hopped. Studies of the genus show that it’s leg articulations were too weak to have felt with the repeated shock of hopping, but it’s long feet were clearly adapted for hopping rather than running. The related leptictid Leptictis has a series of traits showing it was a running animal which sometimes jumped, but there are quite a few notable differences between Leptictidium and Leptictis, for example, the tibia and fibula of the former are not fused together. Continuing the Transitionary Species series is an important step in the evolution of dinosaurs: Archosaurus - Hailing from the Mid-Late Permian deposits of Russia and Poland (265-251 million years ago), the genus of archosauriform Archosaurus is the earliest known of its clade. The only known species, A.rossicus, shows clear changes to its reptilian structure that eventually led to their dominance as the major vertebrates: particularly in the modification of the limbs and pelvis - Judging by related genera like Proterosuchus, Archosaurus would have sort of resembled a primitive crocodile; short legs, strong jaws, powerful neck muscles, whilst still retaining feature unique to proterosuchids; a hook shaped mouth, simple cone shaped teeth. It’s unusual mouth may have been an adaptation for catching small prey like dicynodonts - Archosauria is a group that includes crocodilians, dinosaurs, birds, pterosaurs and other archosaurs - I also want to point out that Archosaurus is CRIMINALLY underused in paleoart and we need more good art of this boi.
