“My relationship with yoga goes way back to seeing the guy in the film Woodstock demonstrating to the entire crowd how they could get high without the aid of drugs! I bought a small book, now lost, called The Spirit of Yoga and practised very intermittently for a while. I worked as a film editor mostly in documentaries and current affairs, a sedentary life style. Around the mid-1980s I started to ‘get fit’ by jogging, circuit training and practising Iyengar yoga at the YMCA. By the end of the 80s I was quite a different shape and three stone lighter. I’d stopped smoking and my tendency to depression had greatly diminished. In December 1989, aged 40, I was out Christmas shopping with my daughter and I was hit in the chest by a pain that I thought was indigestion but big time. I contacted my then GP who was not alarmed. I was a fit person so between us we thought it was muscular, skeletal or indigestion. Three days later I was taken to A&E by ambulance. I’d had a heart attack. In the rehab group I asked whether too much exercise had caused my heart attack. The doctor replied that the only reason I was recovering so well was that I had been relatively fit to start with. In the mid-90s Power Yoga arrived and became a regular part of my life. In 1997 I had more chest pain but this time I had a fair idea of what might be wrong. More hospital, same rehab group, same message, more yoga. I soon got hooked on Ashtanga yoga, and that has been my main practice ever since. In 2009, I had a coronary artery bypass surgery. The first physio to visit me after the operation taught me how to breathe on my own. I was given instructions on how to manage daily life without disturbing the split down the centre of my sternum – for example I was not allowed to get out of a chair using my arms. That’s quite a limitation. After about a year I could get back to a relatively normal Primary Series, I am still not back to where I was before my surgery but I am so much better than immediately after the operation and that is a cause for constant celebration.”

A mark of progress - not physically in shape or asana but in mind. For many years I hid from cameras and taking pictures, afraid of looking fatter than I already felt/looked. Not to mention being shot in a bikini. I’m less bothered now, some of it perhaps age and perspective, some of it a lot of inner work on self acceptance and starting to love and appreciate myself as I am, and start to see myself as ‘dare I say it’ - beautiful. Well, my lovely friend and assistant on my retreat took some lovely yoga asana shots on the beach in Sicily yesterday, what I love about this picture is - I’m smiling and not a fake smile, a true inner glow from pure happiness, sun, sea, sand, yoga and great company - for the first time I looked and saw my smile not the fat rolls around my stomach and cellulite around my thighs
It’s a work in progress, some days better than others, but one step at a time

The past few days in Mexico at @onefirefest have been nothing but beautiful days of beach & pool weather, and the accompaniment of some of the most talented, creative, loving, teachers and individuals I have so been blessed to have met.

The more I am immersed in environments w/ such beautiful energies, the more I continue to see a purpose for my path on this so called journey of life that we are all on. And I think that’s what life is really all about right? Walking along yours and sharing it w/ all that meet you along the way to enjoy all that we have been given.

It’s been truly wonderful to make the acquaintance of each and everyone of you, and the greatest part is, I know that our paths will continue to cross many times over because that’s just the way it is.
