MERCREDI | 10h40 | PHASE DE LATENCE . When working on season 3, we thought about changing the way Eliott would communicate with Lucas - like, using notes instead of drawings or something. It wasn’t really visual though, so we decided to keep the drawings. We just had to find a way to make it different. Even if it was a remake, we were trying to create our own mythology here, so we wanted to put our spin on it. Those drawings had to be specific to Eliott. They had to say something about him, and how he sees things - the world, Lucas, and himself obviously. That’s how we came up with the idea of using animals. We just had to find the right ones. . For Lucas, it was easy. He was tiny, had spiky hair, seemed vulnerable but not defenseless - it just made sense to us. It was still early in the process, though : later, we discovered that Axel’s hair grew A LOT. But he was already a hedgehog in our minds, and we’d already written the moment in episode 2 where Eliott touches his hair and find inspiration for his animal - a moment he would do again in this scene. In episode 2, Eliott does it because he’s holding back, trying not to kiss him for the first time ; here, he’s still holding back, because he doesn’t want to kiss him for the last time. Once when everything seemed possible, and then when everything seems lost. We liked this idea. So we kept the hedgehog. . For Eliott, we already had Polaris at this point, so we were looking for something connected to the story and to him - an animal that lives in the dark. I remember Marine thought about a bat, someone else, maybe Fanny, about a owl... But the pairing seemed odd. I chose the raccoon. Raccoons are smart and curious. They look sweet, but they can be mischievous and unpredictable too. Their most developed sense is the touch. And even if raccoons can be tamed, they’re wild animals at heart. If they feel threatened, or if you don’t treat them properly, they’ll hurt or leave you. Plus, they wear a mask. And though there’s no scientific proof of that, some say that this mask helps them reduce glare, as the dark absorbs the light... . This is the story of a hedgehog and a raccoon, guys. And we’re not done telling it yet.
