For those of you who don’t know, Modern Huntsman is a biannual publication for like-minded conservationists, creatives, and outdoor enthusiasts. Born out of frustration with the way hunting is often misrepresented today, this publication is told from the perspective of hunting purists and the diplomatically-minded, unaltered by the skews of mainstream media, corporate interests, or misinformed emotional rants. - For many of us, hunting is a way of life, a tradition passed down by our grandfathers, fathers, and brave mothers. It’s a way of staying connected to the land, harvesting wild food to sustain our families, and is a shared passion in most countries the world over. Hunting also plays a majority role in conservation, which ensures that wildlife populations thrive and expanses of land stay untamed. - But this isn’t just for hunters, and while we know that there will be opposition, we believe that through our collective stories, photographs, and films, we’ll be able to educate some folks about overlooked realities, and win the minds and hearts of those who still have them open. For over 1000 years, Icelanders have been competing with the arctic fox for survival. - Early settlers of the island country lost many lambs to the cunning fox, threatening not only their livelihood but their source of food over the long winter to come. Managing arctic fox populations now falls mostly in the hands of professional hunters hired by the government, which is where the story of Gunnar Gudmundsson (@hunting_iceland) and his grandfather — pictured here — begins. Gunnar draws on over 300 years of fox hunting tradition to protect bird colonies like that of the common eider, arctic tern or guillemot. Got places to be, yo. People often think of tortoises as these slow, sluggish animals with not much going on and nowhere to be, but that’s far from the case with gopher tortoises. This guy clearly had a destination he was intent on getting to - he barreled towards us and right past us. As he got closer you can hear him heavily breathing and towards the end of the vid he appears to be trotting off.
