I had to draw her... in my way. I first saw this painting in Vienna, after college, while traveling Europe with a close friend. I can’t believe it took me this long to get up to see it in NYC, and it’s been here since 2006. It’s so beautiful, you could stare at it for hours. I especially loved drawing her hands. Plus we had brunch at The Odeon which is always inspiring for my journal. The Woman in Gold recreated in sugar cookie form ✨ In early January, I made a sugar cookie version of Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss”, and also prepared a second cookie base for recreating The Woman in Gold. This second cookie base ended up living in my freezer until last night when I fiiiiinally got around to painting it! Fu suo marito Ferdinando a commissionare il ritratto all’artista per l’anniversario dei genitori di Adele, pochi anni dopo la Secessione di Vienna. ____________ La donna appare come una femme fatale, con gli occhi che celano un’accennata malinconia. Chi l’ha conosciuta la descrive come una donna intellettuale dal carattere alquanto distaccato e, nonostante i privilegi dovuti alla sua vita agiata, la sua era un’esistenza infelice. ___________ Dopo essere stato realizzato a Vienna, Adele chiese al marito Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer di donarlo (assieme ad altre opere di Klimt in suo possesso) alla Österreichische Galerie Belvedere dopo la sua morte. __________ Quando i nazisti invasero l'Austria, il marito, rimasto vedovo, dovette fuggire dall'Austria per rifugiarsi in Svizzera. La sua proprietà, che comprendeva anche i dipinti realizzati da Klimt, venne confiscata perché ebreo. Nel suo testamento del 1945, Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer designò il suo patrimonio ai propri nipoti, includenti #MariaAltmann. ___________ Mentre i dipinti di Bloch-Bauer rimasero in Austria, il governo austriaco sottolineò che, secondo il testamento di Adele, dovevano rimanere in quella nazione. “The woman in gold” is a painting by Gustave Klimp of Adele Bloch-Bauer. Painted in 1903-1907 but stolen by the Nazi’s in 1941. It is returned to the family by the Austrian government in 2004. Maria Altmann won a court case to have it back in the family. It is now in the Neue Galerie in New York.
