Reflecting on the history of "our" place, and wondering about the comings and goings of the past inhabitants over the ages. This abandoned house was last used in the 50s, but no record of when it was built. Our stone cottage predates that by a half century, at least. The arrow heads we occasionally find around the property are evidence of people walking these same woods ages ago. We are thankful everyday for having this beautiful place to call or own, and also mindful that, at best, we are merely temporary caretakers for future generations. That's a humbling thought and inspiration for us to cherish each day and make good decisions about the land while it is under our care.

It has been a few months since this guy and I have had a Tuesday date night walk. It was part of our routine and though it is not a night out at the movies or a fancy dinner, it is something we enjoy together. We can listen to the birds, the breeze blowing through the trees and see the falling sun ☀️. Tomorrow, I'm dropping my husband off at 5 am so he can spend the week on an island. He'll be working, reconnecting with some great friends, and earning the money that will help fund our year of renewal on the homestead. . While he's gone the kids and I will be spending lots of time together: building raised beds, fighting the war on ticks with our flock of birds, raking the garden, and taming the yard. . Praying and working; working and praying. We're going to miss him. I think this is the longest he's ever been away from us. Early spring shiitake mushroom flush! Thanks rain, it keeps us out of the garden but the mushrooms love it.⁣ ⁣ These shiitakes were started 3 years ago, and my then 14 month old daughter had a lot of fun playing whack a mole with a rubber mallet to pound the spawn pegs in. ⁣ ⁣ Since then, they've been mostly ignored in a shady spot in the woods.
