During the Soviet invasion of the United States in the early 1980s, the Midwest became the primary battleground for some of the fiercest fighting during the war. One such battle occurred in western North Dakota in the summer of 1984 at a place called Schaley Farm. At just about 7000 acres, it was an ideal location for a strategic runway for the Soviet ground attack jets and helicopters that were harassing the American and Canadian armored divisions that were busy fighting the Soviet and Communist South American tanks in the southern part of North Dakota and even parts of Northern South Dakota. The Americans, who were gaining a lot of ground against the Communist forces after retaking Fargo, knew that this battle would be a turning point in the war in the Dakotas, so, on June 17th, at around 5 a.m., elements of the 3rd NoDak Independent Tank Battalion and 1st Armored Division attacked the heavily fortified positions on the outskirts of the farm manned by the Vigésimo séptimo grupo de infantería of the CSSA (Communist States of South America) and the 2nd Guards Tamanskaya Motor Rifle Division. . ‘The Polish airborne unit, dubbed the Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade, was created with the intent of dropping an experienced, trained, and well-supplied force into Warsaw after the initiation of an uprising. . ‘From the very beginning, however, the shortage of transport aircraft and the vast distances involved proved a hindrance to such a plan. With the initiation of the Warsaw Uprising on 1 August 1944, the brigade encountered further problems due to the fact that Stalin would not allow Allied planes supporting the uprising to land at Soviet airports, an absolute necessity for any airborne jump into Warsaw. With the reason for their original creation denied, political pressure was put on the London Poles to release the brigade into Allied command, to be used in the upcoming Operation Market Garden. Due to the Soviet intervention, the lack of available aircraft, and in order to prove the Poles commitment to the Allied cause, the brigade was released to British service. . ‘In Operation Market Garden, the Polish brigade was put into battle far too late after it was clear to the Allied command that the operation had failed. In what serves as a microcosm for Poland’s struggle during the Second World War, the use of the Polish Parachute Brigade in Market Garden did nothing but squander a large number of trained Polish fighting men at the expense of the resistance in Poland itself. Despite the hopelessness of their cause and the Allies having dropped the brigade onto enemy-occupied landing zones, resulting in extreme casualties, the brigade fought valiantly, making a river crossing under enemy fire and providing cover to allow the British airborne to escape the German encirclement. . ‘To add further insult, for many years the Poles were blamed for the debacle by one of the operation’s planners, Fredric Browning, despite the fact that it was poor planning in the first place that led to the useless slaughter.
