It's possible that we won't necessarily want the protagonist to achieve their goal. We might want the protagonist to fail. As Paul Gulino puts it, "The typical feeling is, 'I love this character and they're in deep trouble and I want them to win.' But there are times when a character wants something you don't want them to get. And that tension is perfectly valid." We might realize that a character has a self-destructive streak or that they're seeking a goal that won't get them any closer to filling their void. Gulino offers this example: "Go back to the classic [movie] The Apartment. The main character wants to climb his way to the top. That's not what we ultimately want for him. What we want is for him to be a true human being who's not degrading himself constantly to get to the top. We want him to be a full human being who gets true love. That's what we want. That's not what he wants--that's not what he's pursuing. So at the end of the second act, he gets everything he could possibly want--and then he doesn't like it." In these instances, we don't want the character to get what they want; we want the character to get what they need (often a realization of the proper way to act in the world). We'll find that the tension between what a character wants (i.e. is consciously seeking) and what they actually need in order to become a better human being provides a strong narrative drive.
