This weekend I traveled up to Minnesota for my cousin’s high school graduation. Another relative, Jennie, was there from Missouri, and she brought along all my books for me to sign. HOW SWEET IS THAT? And even more that, she and her parents, David and Stephanie, sat around with me for a good hour talking about books and stories and characters and scenes… …and man, as an author, that is such an uplifting and encouraging experience. To get to talk about these books that literally represent years of my life. And characters that reveal huge chunks of my heart…in many cases, vulnerable spaces in my heart that I’m not sure I’d share otherwise. And I’ll tell ya, that hour of sitting with Jennie and her parents made me want to give that same time and support to others. It’s so important to let people know that we value and admire who they are. To care about the things they care about. To take the time to ask questions and then listen and then ask follow-up questions. That’s just huge and it’s something I want to get better at. Because I know how touched I was by the time they spent with me! p.s. Also, I can’t figure out how Jennie and I are related. LOL! My mom is her dad’s cousin. Does that make us second-cousins? Or is there something about “twice-removed” in there? I don’t understand family trees, guys!

Just left seeing @bryancranston in Network. If you’re in the city (and like plays) (and like Bryan Cranston) (who doesn’t like Bryan Cranston) I highly recommend checking it out. In addition to him being an insane talent in diving into raw emotions, the story is timely and existential and speaks to how we consume media, push boundaries against business with ideas, and might’ve even convinced me I’ve gotta go back to school to hone my writing. So with that, here’s this one time I made my friends come and be super healthy with me and I’m gonna spend the rest of the night working on my scripts, plot and character development for the rest of the night

I’m reading a great book right now. One that most people have heard about— “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. And one incredibly profound takeaway from this book so far is that all humans— regardless of any other external factors— all have this fundamental desire to feel important. That’s it. Important. Some of us get it from work. From our broad range of accomplishments. From leaving our mark. But others get it from being a wife. Or a husband. Or a parent. And here’s the thing, loves. The way I see it, passion and importance usually go hand-in-hand. Once you find the thing you’re truly passionate about, you throw yourself fully into it. And your sense of importance follows organically. But when you haven’t found that thing yet? That’s when you find yourself lost in this world. Aimless. Wandering around, wondering where it is that you fit. Without a sense of importance, we lack the most fundamental human desire there is. And while I’ve never been a believer in flattery or false praise— maybe this is just a little perspective for you today. For yourself. And the billions of other people somewhere on that journey.
