A German pilot of a Rumpler C.VII poses for a photo in full gear, an electrically heated flight suit and mask, shortly before a mission over the Western Front, 1917. The Rumpler C.VII was the most advanced reconnaissance aircraft of the war. Being able to fly at altitudes as high as 24,000 feet, it was untouchable by Entente fighters. The crew of 2 operated at such high altitudes that primitive heated flight suits and masks had to be provided. By the wars end, at least one was captured and sent back to the United States. The Germans were equipped with some of the most advanced aircraft and skilled pilots of the war. This gave them the upper hand and superiority in the skies from 1915 untilthee summer of 1918. In 1915/1916, the Germans introduced the first fighter (made by the Fokker company) with synchronized guns that could fire through the propellers. This allowed this to aim effectively and be much more accurate. During the period, the average lifespan of a British pilot was just 17 hours. The papers called it "The Fokker Scourge." To counter this, the Britush developed new fighters with synchronized guns of their own. These fighters were primitive themselves but were able to lighten the casualties and even the playing field a little bit. It was during these years that the first Aces appeared. They were the rockstars of their day; having their faces plastered on the papers, on cigarette boxes, cards, etc. You may be wondering how these aces and their peers lived after missions? In short: like kings. Many lived on commendeered French chateauxs where congac and champagne almost never ran short. These luxuries distracted them from the stress of their missions for a short time but, it never really left their minds. CAPTION CONTINUED DOWN BELOW IN THE COMMENTS. DO NOT MISS OUT! -

Members of Luftschiffer-Bataillon Nr.1 manning a Maxim Flak M14 "pom-pom" The 3.7cm "M-Flak" was capable of firing between 250-300 shells per minute, each with a muzzle velocity of 540 m/s. From late 1915 M-Flak batteries defended balloons and important positions and installations. German flak units were part of the Air Service, whilst the majority of the Allied anti-aircraft units were part of the artillery.

For some reason my World War 1 photo I posted last night was quite popular so here is another that shows more of my jacket! I made this entire uniform with patterns drafted from 1916 dressmakers' diagrams. All of the insignia, buttons, and leather is original. My impression is of US Army Contract Surgeon Dr. Anna Tjomsland, who served almost 18 months, 13 of which were in France, plus an additional six in the Red Cross after her discharge.

12 year old Serbian soldier Dragoljub Jelichich in 1914 (Standing next to, what looks like a French Schneider 75mm 1912 cannon) Dragoljub Jelichich (1902 - 1963) was one of the youngest soldiers in the Serbian Army during the First World War The Jelichich family originally lived in Kordun, in present-day Croatia, but emigrated as refugees to the Serbian town Shabac, hoping for a better life there. When Serbia was invaded by Austria-Hungary, Dragoljub had just begun elementary school. His father was among the ones that were killed in the initial battles of the war.
As the Austro-Hungarian Army approached Belgrade, he participated in the attempts to defend the Serbian capital against the invading forces. Jelichich later managed to escape southwards to a unit stationed near Rudnik.
During a battle for the Machva region, he was wounded while replacing a machine gunner who had been killed earlier. In Nish, he befriended Archibald Reiss, a professor in criminology who later would become known for his documentations of Austro-Hungarian war crimes against civilians during the occupation of Serbia Reiss wrote about the encounter in his memoirs
During the war, Jelichich was personally awarded the rank of Corporal by Prince-Regent Alexander. Shortly before the age of fourteen, he was promoted to Lance Sergeant, and he participated in the battles at the Salonika Front. He was wounded six times in total during the course of the war.

Special weekend post.
Manfred von Richthofen, better known to the Allied forces as the 'Red Baron', was shot down and killed near Vaux-sur-Somme, France. He was twelve days short of his 26th birthday.
Debate has ranged for the best part of the following century as to who actually shot down the Red Baron.
Credit went initially to a Canadian pilot, Captain Roy Brown, who was engaged in a dogfight with Richthofen at the time, diving after him low over the Somme River.
However, he was also coming under ground fire from the ridge above the river and the popular theory, widely accepted now, is that the fatal shot was fired by Cedric Popkin, an anti-aircraft machine gunner with the Australian Imperial Forces.
Richthofen was able to make a rough but controlled landing in a nearby field along the Bray-Corbie road, but eye witness reports at the time claim he died almost immediately.
Australian stretcher-bearer Sergeant Ted Smout was among the first to reach the downed aircraft and reported that Richthofen's final word was 'kaputt' ('finished'). He later admitted he had to resist the temptation to souvenir the famed pilot's iron cross medal and flying boots.
In 1964, four years before his own death at the age of 77, Popkin admitted to a reporter for the Brisbane Courier-Mail: "I am fairly certain it was my fire which caused the Baron to crash, but it would be impossible to say definitely that I was responsible ... As to pinpointing without doubt the man who fired the fatal shot, the controversy will never actually be resolved." Although Smout resisted the temptation, the Australians - soon joined by others - made short work of claiming their own small piece of the historical trophy, cutting sections of the red fabric from Richthofen's Fokker DR1 triplane, and salvaging other mementoes.
