Shown above is my Iron Cross Second Class WW1. The Iron Cross is probably the most well known medal for Germany In both World Wars. It was created in 1813 by King Friedrick Wilhelm III Of Prussia for bravery in war.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Iron Crosses were handed out during the Franco-Prussian War which you would know if it has 1870 written on if. WW1 for 1914 and WW2 for 1939. Over the years the design slightly changed. There were 2 different versions for this medal. The 1st Class medal was a pin at the back where you could stick it on your uniform. The 2nd Class which is the one shown (my medal) had a ribbon. There were other rare versions but were awarded to higher ranked military men.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
During World War One, around 218,000 1st Class Iron Crosses and 5,196,000 2nd Classes were awarded. Plus 15,000 more were awarded to civillians.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Adolf Hitler in 1939 restored the famous medal and issued it in 3 different versions. Knights Cross, Iron Cross and Grand Cross. Under 5 million 2nd Class Iron Crosses and 300,000 1st Class were awarded. Adolf Hitler placed a Nazi Symbol on it.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This particular Iron Cross is original and it's in a good condition.

German flamethrower attack on French trenches in Verdun.
Though projected incendiary weapons such as Greek fire were used in naval engagements by ancient Byzantines and Chinese, the modern flamethrower made its debut in 1901, when Richard Fiedler submitted his "Flammenwerfer" design to the German Army.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Most flamethrower designs consisted of a vertical single cylinder carried on a soldier’s back, horizontally divided in two, one filled with a flammable liquid, the other with propellant gas. The squeeze of a trigger would send the liquid shooting across an igniter, projecting a jet of burning fuel at targets up to 18 meters away.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The first combat use of the flamethrower came on Feb. 26, 1915, against the French near Verdun. The usefulness of the weapon was limited by its short range and limited mobility. On July 30, 1915, flamethrowers were used effectively against British positions at Hooge to flush soldiers out of their trenches and into the open.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The flamethrower, like poison gas, was a psychologically terrifying weapon, leading to its use by the German Army in more than 650 attacks in the war. It was also adopted by the British and French over the course of the conflict.
“Overwhelmed” June 14,1918- Two U.S Marines attempt to take over a German trench during the Battle of Belleau Wood (June 1st-26th 1918)- One marine is armed with a Winchester Model 1897 shotgun. This weapon would first be used in the Philippine-American War of 1898. When the United States entered World War One they knew they would need a weapon that had a massive amount of firepower at close range. To fit the needs of trench combat a bayonet lug and a steel heat shield were added. Soldiers carrying this weapon would used Buckshot ammunition. Since this weapon had no trigger disconnect it could be “slamfired.” This meant the operator could hold down the trigger while cycling the shotgun to fire the weapon extremely fast. The Germans issued a diplomatic protest against the shotgun saying it violated the laws of war. American troops rejected the protest and continued to use the weapon. This rejection greatly upset the German forces which lead to them issuing threats that they would punish any soldier caught with a shotgun or shotgun shells. Gun shots after gun shots, the war to end all wars is about to begin. The world before we know had changed in front of our eyes. Know one knew what was to come and know one knew that the war to end all wars ended nothing. It was a normal day in Sarajevo on June 28th 1914. People were roaming the streets, going to markets, talking to their buddy’s, and just enjoying their day. On that one single day many lives before we know it would soon begin to change. Archduke Franz Ferdinand happened to be out that day with his wife Sophie, enjoying the beautiful city of Sarajevo. Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were driving around seeing military members of the Balkan Wars, seeing an opening of a state museum, and as well their 14th anniversary. The day suddenly changed drastically. A member of Young Bosnia had thrown a bomb as Arch Duke Franz Ferdinands car, fortunately, the Bomb missed and only injured 16 people. But, the day was not over. Archduke Franz Ferdinand decided to change his route in Sarajevo. Ferdinand’s driver was not alert of the so change and he made a wrong turn, that changed history in a heartbeat. The driver made a stop and began attempting to reverse. Meanwhile Gavrilo Princip made the shot that single handily led to the outbreak of the First World War. Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Sophie are now perished in the hands of Gavrilo Princip. Nations erupted in anger and only a month later on July 28th 1914, the Great War had officially begun.
