One of the boons of living in Taiwan is exposure to craft in a way that exists only in tiny pockets in the US. Master Li comes to fire the wood kiln at the studio and this time around he brought some (over a hundred) cups to carve and add to the firing if space allows. The language barrier doesn’t really matter when you can observe and absorb a craftsman at work. Because I have my own work to do in the studio I don’t have as much time as I would like to have to see my teacher at work but most of the action during a wood firing happens at night so I get invaluable time to learn. . . . . . It has been some time since we last had the pleasure of opening a kiln full of our shino covered Yama pieces and it was such a beautiful experience for us to do so last week. We both have a deep love for this glaze and the subtle depths retained within its surface that it’s easy to lose track of time picking up the different vessels, taking them outside into the sun and looking deeper at the details of each piece. The shino we use utilises soda ash to trap carbon within the glaze’s surface. This happens when the kiln’s atmosphere is changed and the amount of oxygen is greatly reduced creating a reduction atmosphere. The gas is burnt inefficiently and soot fills the kiln, landing upon the cup’s surfaces - the soda ash helps melt the glaze early enough that the carbon becomes trapped within the glazes surface before it is burnt out within the kiln. With our recipe and our firing cycle, the amount of carbon trapped is small but it is how we like it. There are subtle clouds of grey and charcoal that float and shimmer within the vessel’s surfaces and it layers alongside the metallic melted iron flecks and semi lustrous gold and copper tones caused by the differing amounts of terracotta used within the different batches of glazes. We are so happy and proud to be able to stock our digital shelves this week full of these pieces and celebrate the slow but sure onset of Autumn down here. My first babies that i’ve made in Taiwan are out of the kiln three tiny teabowls. All with transparent glaze on which were testing the thickness of the glaze to make sure the blue lines didn’t bleed. They bled around the rim of all three tests because that’s where the most movement in the glaze is because it’s thickest, but I don’t mind that, as long as the pattern is crisp - and it is, so I’m happy! I’m also shocked to see how white the porcelain is after firing, as some of you may have noticed how much browner it is than my usual stuff before firing - so that is a nice surprise . . В понедельник получила посылку от @kund.ceramics с волшебными глиняными чашами. Я пью чай уже лет 7 и за это время у меня впервые случился такой неожиданно приятный опыт. ⠀ ⠀ Конечно, испытываешь смешанные чувства, расставляя в ряд три чашки и пробую из каждой чай по очереди, но! как по разному он в них раскрывался. Все чаши отмечены номерами и это их одушевляет - каждый номер словно имя по которому к ней хочется обратиться. Удивительным для меня стал момент, что глина нагревалась, очень круто и долго раскрывая аромат чая в уже пустой чаше. ⠀ ⠀ Особенным спросом у меня пользуется большая чаша, ношу ее с собой на работу и все время завариваю листья прямо в ней. Пока не разобралась сколько чая нужно класть, чтобы избегать горчинки в первых проливах, но опыт определенно стоит изучения.
