So this is probably one of the two rarest/coolest World War Two items I own. I meant to post this on June 6th but forgot. This is an original, D-Day used 101st Airborne ‘cricket’ or clicker. If you’ve seen Band Of Brothers, you’ll know that the 101st Airborne were given a cricket in order to communicate with other Airborne troops within enemy territory. This proved invaluable upon the incredibly scattered parachute drops on D-Day. The crickets were based on a popular child’s toy at the time, and although the bottom sheet of metal has corroded on my example, a paratrooper would have pressed the cricket down once to create a click noise in the hopes that an Allie would respond with a further two clicks. If the cricket had been lost the code words ‘flash’ and ‘thunder’ were known as a back up. This cricket was found in Normandy by a farmer who then gave it to small a local museum which subsequently shut down when I managed to save it from being lost again. These are seriously rare, to the point that @acme_whistles, who made the originals and verified mine as a true wartime cricket, sent an appeal out recently looking to find any known examples. On 22nd and 23rd December 1940, 441 Luftwaffe aircraft dropped 467 tons of high explosives and 1925 incendiary bombs onto the English city of Manchester and surrounding towns. It became known as the Christmas Blitz and 750 civilians were killed. In one particular case, three generations of the same family celebrating a Christmas party were killed in a blast at Varley Street in Miles Platting. The signs of the Christmas Blitz are few and far between in a city keen to modernise, but if you search hard enough it is there to be found. This cemetery is by far the most tangible evidence of the Blitz, with more than 40 headstones being heavily covered with shrapnel and fire damage. One part of the cemetery is complete void of any graves, where a bomb left an enormous crater. PFC Robert Van Klinken was the third generation of Dutch immigrants. He still spoke the dialect of the province of Groningen in the Netherlands, the country his grandfather left more than 50 years earlier. When his battalion liberated Eindhoven, a small group of Germans was hiding on the third floor of the Philips factory. One can understand the surprise of the Dutch civilians who heard an American paratrooper say with a Groninger accent, ‘Wacht mor eevns. Wie hoaln heur der wel oet.’, meaning; ‘Hold on. We’ll go get them out.’ This must have been Van Klinken, as it was unlikely any other paratrooper spoke the accent of Groningen.
