[THIS POST IS STRICTLY NON-POLITICAL] American paratroopers from both the 502nd and 506th PIR (Parachute Infantry Regiment) pose with the spoils of war after heaving fighting the day prior, June 6th, 1944. This photograph was taken just south of Ravenoville, at Marmion Farm. On June 6th an hour and half long battle took place between the paratroopers and the German soldiers defending the farm which had been a command post. The flag that is being held by paratrooper James Flanagan, who took it off the wall of the command post when the fighting was done. The helmet at his boots had been exactly where it was the day prior when the German soldier wearing it was killed. Flanagan was apart of 2nd Platoon, "C" Company, 502nd PIR, 101st Airborne. He would survive the war and keep the flag, later donating it to the museum of the 101st Airborne where it still resides today. All of these paratroopers had been fighting for hours from about 1:15 AM to 9:00 AM (when this photograph was taken) practically non-stop. The paratrooper to the left of Flanagan appears to have a bullet hole in his helmet, evidence of the incredibly chaotic and heavy fighting that took place the hours prior. The soldier to the right of Flanagan is holding a jump machete, used for cutting yourself out of your harness or making your way through thick vegetation. On June 5th, 1944, the American paratroopers were told to get on their gear, pack their chutes, and get ready to jump. Skepticism of if this jump would be scrubbed by weather too ran high, several jumps in the days prior had been announced and then cancelled as the men were loading into their aircraft. But this time the paratroopers knew it would probably be the real deal. As the sun began to set, paratroopers were packing all of their essential items including: ammuntion, grenades, explosive blocks, gammom bombs, reserve chute, extra jump cord, identification clicker, jump knife, bayonet, machete, firearm, first aid kit, cigarettes, and rations.
