1942 Harley-Davidson XA, USA ❔Did you know that only 100 motorcycles were made with solid discs? In 1941 Harley-Davidson got a US Government contract for the development of a new motorcycle designated for military operations in North Africa. Model WLA which was already delivered to the US Army did not have one important feature which was critically important under the severe conditions of moving in dust and sand: the shaft drive. 1937 Rikuo Type 97, Japan In 1932 Sankyo Seiyaku sent its representative to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with the aim of purchasing a production license and a plant for manufacturing the 1200-cc, VL-series motorcycle. The USA was in the grips of a strong economic crisis, so Harley-Davidson Motors Co. that was on the verge of bankruptcy happily accepted the Japanese offer. In 1933 the plant equipment was demounted and shipped to Japan where it was re-assembled again in the city called Kita-Shinagawa, not far from Tokyo.  Local production was also launched, and soon these motorcycles were sold as a Japanese make: they got a brand name Rikuo (“King of the Road”), so that they would be more like local motorcycles. Kaarlo Kullervo Laitinen (1920-1944) from 8th Infantry Regiment with his PPSh-41, Syvärinniska-Juksova area, August 25, 1944. Laitinen was awarded the Mannerheim Cross (#83) on August 23, 1942. Conceived in 1984 by a group of Holocaust survivors in Miami, the Holocaust Memorial in Miami Beach is a profoundly powerful experience. Miami Beach is a perfect location for the site, as the South Florida area is home to a number of Holocaust survivors. Before its construction, objections were raised by some who believed that Miami Beach was a symbol of fun and a holocaust memorial would put a damper on that image. However, after the group of survivors pleaded their case, the memorial was finally approved. The Holocaust Memorial is a solemn reminder of crimes against humanity, as The Sculpture of Love and Anguish (the focal point of the site) can be a heart-wrenching reminder of the past. The thousands of victims' names etched into the luminous black granite Memorial Wall is one of the most emotional reads visitors are ever likely to experience.
