This fantastic object is a model of a BEE, made by Dr Louis Auzoux in c.1875, and - most incredibly - crafted entirely from PAPIER-MACHE. . After a visit to the papier-mache workshop of the renowned craftsman Jean Francois Ameline in 1820, Auzoux began experimenting with the medium himself. At the the time, Auzoux was disappointed by the lack of real specimens to use for dissection and the study of anatomy. As necessity and frustration are so often the mother of invention and entrepreneurship, Auzoux began to craft his own models from papier-mache. The results were made of parts that could be easily removed and reassembled, and therefore used again and again. The intricate separate parts were even numbered to show which order they should be dissected in. . Auzoux's technique proved to be so popular that by 1825 he had opened his own factory to manufacture these educational models on a larger scale.
