THE VEIL OF IGNORANCE, a thought experiment (Part 2) • Imagine you are the designer of a new world. You get to construct it as you please. How would you do so fairly? How would a world have to be created to ensure real harmony, peace and equality? You decide. . But wait, there’s a catch. So that your decisions remain impartial, and you don’t design a state for your own benefit, you must wear a blindfold. A veil of ignorance. . Behind the veil, you have no idea what kind of being you will be in this new world. You might be born a human, a dog, a pig, a cat, a cow, or a chicken. You might be a cow, or a human eating a burger that was once that cow, or this human’s beloved dog. You might spend your entire life in a cage as a hen, or you might be her baby boy who gets killed on his first day of life, or you might be the person buying the chicken nugget that was once that hen. You might be a beautiful fox, or a woman wearing that fox’s skin, or that woman’s cherished cat. You have no idea who you will be in this world. You set the rules of the game, but you don’t know what role you will later play in it. How would you create this new world, to ensure you, yourself, are not born into suffering? . Behind the veil of ignorance, we are forced to consider the perspective of all the members of our Earth family, including the worst-off and best-off members. There are 2 million animal species on our Earth, and you and I randomly happened to be born into the strongest one. We got really, really lucky. . Does the awareness of our own privilege involve a responsibility to care for others, if we are able to? If it were easy for us to avoid hurting others and ensure the well-being of less privileged beings, should we at least try? . What if we lived in a world in which each individual were to base their decisions off the fact that they could be the least advantaged being on the planet? What would the world look like, if we all cared for the collective wellbeing of all humans, non-humans, and the planet, and tried our best to bring peace to all? . Today, the animal agriculture industry breeds and kills tens of BILLIONS of chickens, cows, pigs & other animals every single year. These animals are mutilated, grown in confinement, and killed in slaughterhouses that put knives through their throats. - Although most of us think about farms as pretty places with blue skies, green pastures and happy animals, reality is very different. I’ve been to farms, slaughterhouses and spoken to multiple people in the industry, and the only constant is that animals who are grown for food today suffer, and most of the time unimaginably. - And so here’s the question. What would God think about this? Everyday, it pains me to know that hundreds of millions of innocent beings, who feel emotions just like our dogs and cats, will have their lives brutally taken from them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It pains me to know that they’ll be tortured for nothing more than a sandwich. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And it’s easy to let this frustration turn to anger. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But we have to remember that the animals who are being exploited as we speak don’t want us to dwell on their suffering. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If they had voices, they’d tell us to turn our frustration into motivation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They’d tell us to do something. The animals want us to fight as hard as we can for them, just like how we would if it were us locked behind the dark walls of a factory farm. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m going to keep doing my best to turn this frustration into motivation, and use it to work towards our goal of animal liberation. Every day, 3,000,000,000 land and sea animals are slaughtered for no better reason than taste, tradition, habit, convenience or culture They're killed with bolt guns, knives, nets, hooks and gas chambers Who are the real 'militant terrorists' forcing their views on others? The meat eaters who are paying for this to happen to animals? Or the vegans who want to see it ended?
