Long Post Warning! Being raised by a very eco-conscious mom, I used to think that my family was just embarrassingly old-fashioned. But I’m so grateful for it now. From never throwing away food and feeding the scraps to the chickens, to turning junk paper into compostable ashes to fertilize the vegetable garden, to turning ripped clothing and sheets into reusable rags, to having a ceramic Starbucks mug for coffee out, was just normal for us. I didn’t have trendy plastic 90’s toys, I had a wooden dollhouse that I assembled and painted and filled with miniatures I made. For the past year or so, I’ve been on a minimalist journey towards using up what I already have and making gradual changes to generate less waste and single-use plastic. Becoming more intentional about what I own has made my mind feel less cluttered and has made me less attached to material things. But I still have stuff. I have a whole weirdo shelf of Martha Stewart Living magazines that I’ve collected since I was 10 because I LOVE them. I also have sound equipment, gowns, heels, jewelry, makeup, etc. for my singing jobs. Because the concept of minimalism isn’t about having nothing. It’s simply about intentionality with what you do have. And while I am so glad that the minimalism movement is becoming so popular, I ask everyone purging their stuff to be conscious of where it’s going. Thrift stores are already overwhelmed by the amount of donations they receive and can’t store or sell it all. Will it ultimately end up in a landfill? Can the stuff you’re getting rid of be reused or given to someone who needs it? It takes more work but it’s worth it. And when you’re debating whether or not to buy something, don’t ask “does it spark joy?” Because of COURSE it will. That’s a biological response to buying new stuff. Instead, ask yourself, How will this contribute to my life? What resources/materials were used to make this? What is the longevity of this? Where will it eventually end up? All this to say, be MORE materialistic. By that I mean, give importance to material things, because stuff impacts on our world.

I don’t share numbers that frequently. But I’m so excited that we are close to the finish line for our 1 year emergency fund. We have saved up 75,000 usd in cash since we bought our house. • This is something we have been upto since October 2018 which is when I joined #debtfreecommunity in Instagram. • My initial goal was to save 8 months expenses but this community has inspired me to save more. Our goal is 85K by end of May which is over 1 year of our living expenses. Isabelle Lam's ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ drew inspiration from Wes Anderson’s film of the same title. The alternative Legislative Council of Hong Kong is a network of recycling centres and prefabricated temporary floating homes. It implements policies of anti-consumerism, pro-democracy and philanthropy. The project aims to cultivate community spirit; tackle the increasingly acute waste problem and housing crisis in Hong Kong; and challenge the traditional cultural values and dominant building typologies in the city.
