Ants are incredible little animals—anything that humans can do ants seem to do as well. Often even much better! Leaf-cutter ants, for instance, have been raising fungi in sprawling underground gardens for 50 million years—5,000 times longer than humans have been at it. And even though the ants can harvest a full one-fifth of all of the rainforest's productivity (the leaves produced by trees) the Amazon has become, in that time, the most biodiverse ecosystem that has ever existed on our planet. Ants do all sorts of other amazing things as well—some species herd other animals for food—again, much longer than humans have raised animals and with none of the negative environmental costs; others maintain the balance of their forest ecosystems by raiding other ant and wasp species, keeping their numbers in check. . We have a lot to learn from these tiny, industrious creatures, which is why the ASA has made ants the focus of this year's environmental education project in Madre de Dios, Peru. We hope to reach more than 1,000 kids in the region this summer to teach them all about these important, fascincating creatures that work so hard to keep our planet healthy and biodiverse, asking nothing in return.
